It develops a longer, spikier mane. More brown markings form into gloves on its hands, masks around its eyes, a diamond shape mark on the forehead, the tips of its ears and the tip of its trunk. It also develops claws on its hands. As a male, it has long pointed tusks, whereas a female has smaller tusks but a longer mane than that of a male; these claws and tusks are a further reference to Baku, the Japanese mythological dream-devouring tapir. It gains two more circular pendulums as the first pendulum becomes octagonal-shaped; entangled in black string that connects all three pendulums to both its hands in a reference to Cat’s Cradle. It can freely entangle and untangle the string with its Psychic ability to perform physical attacks more efficiently.Base Stats - Mega Hypno :HP : 85ATK : 83DEF : 90SP. ATK : 83SP. Pokemon One a Day: Drowzee
Who knew Tapirs were psychic? And could be stylized to be so creepy looking? Today on Pokemon One a Day, I’ve modern art’d for you all one Drowzee! The direction I took for the illustration today was founded in cubist principles, but only to be trumped towards something more expressionist.
The thing that draws me to psychic Pokemon, a type that you might not associate with Drowzee on face value, is their quiet and limit breaking innate powers - they are all creatures who value intelligence and use strong minds to crush you with their eyes closed, without ever having to lay a finger on you. Their power is usually transcendent in nature; omniscient and indescribable at times. Drowzee…doesn’t really exude any of that! Drowzee is a fatty with a big schnoz and a boring coloring scheme.
So why this style? I started with something wholeheartedly intended to be cubist. I felt as if this approach could portray a psychic Pokemon well, and you have to have an open mind to see the connection -psychic types can bend and twist reality - they can play with your mind and change how you look at the world. Just as Cubists can take what we see before us and turn it into lines, shapes, and exaggerated color palettes, I thought that fit could make a dull Pokemon like Drowzee more interesting.
I started off with a draft and let it sit for a bit. I came back to it, referencing several cubist works, mostly Picasso and Braque. I took ideas and molded it into the form of the illustration, focusing on just Drowzee and his shape as to make the work recognizable. Cubist works and the subject matter portrayed are usually flanked by backgrounds that can only help make the work disappear further into the canvas, so I attempted to have a pseudo background form around the silhouette.
For the colors, I dissected the body into yellow and brown like the original, and add a pinkish hue in the midst in between, as if to showcase the psychic energy stored within the creature. I thought this was a good way add some pizaz that could really brighten up the work…the piece wouldn get stale from just tonal variations of yellow and brown.
As I continued work, the piece began to clean up the lines I had used to split my sections. Cubist works are very forward in showing separation of forms and the subjects depicted, so after some time of working on the piece, I knew the end was coming when I had to redefine the body of Drowzee by adding new lines. I used a textured brush to capture the painting approach of previous artists but also used a solid, wet brush to clean up the lines and inject details here and there.
That was when the cubism train began to slow down. I’m not the biggest fan of using black for paintings - this is something that has been drilled into me by two painting professors. Oh, and by the way, I had to do a cubist painting for Painting 2 two years ago, and what I started as cubist turned expressionist, just like today’s work. Old habits die hard.
So anyway, I continued to work and could not apologize for losing sight of the cubist origin. I just tend to clean up all my works a bit too much, for better or for worse. I wonder what it could have looked like if I did stick to the intended style, but for now, this will have to do. I am content with the piece, don’t get me wrong, but for a daily drawing project, you have a lot of thoughts about loose ends. Thanks all for reading this particularly long write up, and hope you enjoyed the work!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
